Happy New Year

Sega is kicking off the new year in PSO2 with the return of the New Years lobby, as well as a brand new Extreme Quest and two scratches! While the new content will come later in the month, you’ll be able to experience the lobby on New Years day. Stop by the shrine in the center of the shopping area to pray and hear your fortune.

Neuya Nyau will return on New Years as well with new ★12 weapon drops.

New Extreme Quest

The Zenith of Heaven and Earth is unlike any other Extreme Quest we’ve faced before, forcing players to go it alone against powerful adversaries like Dark Falz doppelgangers and a squad of Nyau!

The quest will span ten stages, following the five stage per run standard. However, the entry fee has been raised to five Extreme Passes, meaning a total of ten will be required to complete all of the stages. On top of that, players will be limited to clearing the quest up to five times a week per ship.

Although you won’t find any meseta in the quest, valuable items such as Lambda Grinders, spellstones, and Photon Boosters can be obtained. Choose your best class and clear all ten stages to receive ‘Ace of Class’ stickers, like the ‘Ace of Hunter’. In addition, new titles earned from the quest will reward players with Lambda Grinders and Nero Fragments.

Year of the Monkey

It’s time to ring in the new year, and what better to do so than with a scratch filled with popular past items. The Year of the Monkey revival scratch will arrive on January 1st and be split up into two categories.

The [Accessory Selection] includes all manner of hairstyles, accessories, voice tickets, and lobby actions that you may have missed the first time around. The [Lucky Bag G] comes at a higher price, but contains bundles of items, such as costumes with related accessories, and special ability affixers.

Summoner Class

Episode 4 introduces the brand new “Summoner” class to PSO2, capable of calling pets into battle. Summoners utilize a new type of weapon called a “Baton” to conduct their pets on the field. Let’s take a look at three pets, each with various distinct characteristics.

The well-rounded “Wanda” is easy to handle, boasting wide-range attacks.

The fast and furious avian “Torim” is ideal for bosses, with its swift and powerful strikes.

The support-based “Sully” is great at drawing enemies together.

Before you start an adventure with your pet, you’ll need to obtain its egg and give it a name. Players can level up their pets by performing Egg Synthesis. This process involves combining eggs with a pet, in a similar fashion to feeding items to a Mag.

At the Pet Lab, the rarity level of a pet can be increased through ‘Rarity Evolving’.

A pet’s abilities can be customized by arranging candy in a box. By compressing the candy, you can fit even more abilities inside.

A New Story

Following two years after the finale of Episode 3, players will embark on a new storyline using the “Story Board” system. There to guide them is Sierra, a full-time operator for the player character. She can be found on the Bridge, which serves as the base of operations for Episode 4.

Once the update hits the servers. all players will be able to start from Episode 4. From here, players will be given the opportunity at the character selection screen to switch between Episode 4 and Episode 1 ~ 3.

Episode 4 will feature new characters, like high school students, Hitsugi & Koori, and a mysterious boy who was recently given the name “Aru.”

Planet Earth

Planet Earth will serve as the main stage for the beginning of Episode 4. Players will head to the streets of Tokyo, Japan in the year 2028 to face a host of all-new enemies. The field features a day and night cycle with some scenery changes.

Earth will feature a new “Phantom” enemy type–monstrosities that are the embodiment of people’s fears and imaginations. These Phantoms come in various shapes, from strange looking animals to combat vehicles and even humanoids.

Watch out for the Train Ghidoran, a gargantuan mass of trains in the form of a three-headed dragon. Each head has a different method of attack.

Take an exhilarating run through the city, using “Dash Panels” to keep up your speed. New Emergency Trials will have players racing against the clock to defeat a horde of Phantom Enemies while picking up Energy Capsules along the way. Another will task players with defeating the Phantom Cars driving recklessly on the streets.

Character Creation Improvements

Character creation and customization is getting a plethora of new features and improvements. All players will receive a third free character slot, and the maximum number of characters will be increased to twenty!

Newly used tickets will be indicated by a small icon when visiting the salon. Players will be able to select their favorite accessories and hairstyles for easy sorting. Hairstyles can be viewed in a large window like the one previously afforded to accessories.

The size and angle of accessories can finally be adjusted, allowing for all sorts of unique and creative combinations. An extra body paint slot will be added as well, so you won’t have to sacrifice your tights or chest hair for those cool gloves or tattoos.

Players can immediately access the salon straight from the quick menu. New salon options will allow players to change the lighting and background and have their characters perform lobby actions.

CASTs are getting a much needed addition with the inclusion of separate body proportions when wearing parts or humanoid clothing. Aside from that, players will be given the option to change the position of the sheathed weapon on their character.

New character creation options will allow players to adjust the size of their character’s head, neck, waist, and hips.

Building upon the accessory selection from Episode 3 comes the “Fashion Edit” menu. This menu allows you to change your character’s hairstyle, body paint, costume, and accessories outside of the salon. Players can also register up to ten different sets of outfit combinations through the “My Fashion” menu and switch between them on the fly.

The new Layered Wear costumes are unique in that they come with three different layers of clothing: Innerwear, Basewear, and Outerwear. Characters will also come with different Innerwear and Basewear by default depending on their race. You can also change your Innerwear’s priority to make it show up beneath or above the body paint.

Crunchyroll Announcement

Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation has officially began airing in Japan. We previously reported that Sentai Filmworks had licensed the series for North American release. Now streaming site Crunchyroll has picked it up for their early 2016 lineup. The show will be available to the site’s members and will broadcast every Saturday, starting January 9th @ 1:00 AM EST.

DVD / Blu Ray Vol. 1 Announcement

In unrelated news, a Blu-ray / DVD release of the first volume of the anime is coming to Japan on March 16th, 2016. Aside from the standard release, there will also be a limited first edition. While both versions include item codes for several in-game goodies, the limited edition is packaged with extra bonuses like a visual book, bonus disc, and a special outer case.

The Summoner class commands an array of pets, using a baton to conduct their attacks. The user can assist their pet in battle with technics and active skills, while keeping their distance to avoid enemy strikes. Summoners can also wield gunslashes, but won’t be able to utilize their pets without a baton.

Commanding Pets

Commanding your pet is a simple process. Using the baton you can issue an attack order, causing the pet to automatically dish out normal attacks until there are no more enemies nearby. Pressing the PA button will allow it to perform a Photon Art, depending on which move was set to its palette.

When the update launches on January 27th, players will have three types of pets to choose from.

Wanda is known as an ‘all-rounder’ due to its ease of use, and will be the first pet you’ll obtain. This pup packs high HP and wide-range attacks for hitting enemies en-masse. It can use PAs like Wanda Break and Wanda Slicer.

Torim excels at power and speed, proving most effective against bosses. Capable of flight, it can freely assault foes at any location. Torim Spiral and Torim Stab are some of the PAs at its disposal.

Sarie focuses on support with long-range attacks resembling technics. Among this feline’s arsenal of moves is a support-type PA that can lower an enemy’s attack power.

Obtaining Pets

In order to obtain a pet, you’ll first need an egg. There are a variety of these eggs available in the game. Some will hatch pets, while others are EXP or stat-based. Eggs can drop from enemies and containers, but some of the ones you’ll acquire will be in the form of a ?Special Egg. You can head to the ARKS Lobby to identify these eggs at a shop. Unlike the player, pets do not gain experience during battle. They must instead be leveled up through a process called “Egg Synthesis.”

Egg Synthesis

Egg Synthesis is the only means by which you can level up your pet. This action can be performed up to five times in a given period. Afterwards, you must wait a certain amount of time before you can synthesize again. The process works exactly like the energy bar for Mags, except you are given five slots to “feed” the pet. You can optionally use AC items to reduce the wait.

Elements and Personalities

Like weapons, pets come with a certain elemental attribute. By placing a specific type of candy in its Candy Box, the element can be changed. Each pet also has a personality that can activate a special effect once certain conditions are met. For example, one personality will increase your pet’s damage towards enemies with status effects. Another will increase damage when the weather is clear. You can modify its personality through a process called “Rarity Evolution.”

Rarity Evolution

Rarity Evolution is performed at the Pet Lab. A pet’s rarity level can be raised using eggs of its same type, so long as they have a higher rarity than your current pet. When you raise its rarity level, the pet’s candy box and level get transferred over. This feature allows you to continue raising your pets without having to start all over once you obtain eggs of higher rarities. Keep in mind that your pet’s rarity is important in that it will be used to determine its current level cap. You will also be given the option to change your pet’s personality prior to completing this action.

Candy Box

The Candy Box is a new system that allows you to raise your pet’s abilities and affix special effects. The box is set up into an 8 x 8 grid. Some spaces are blank, while others are covered with cubes of various colors. These blank spaces are known as “sheets” and are used to hold any type of candy that can fit into the space provided.

Blocking your path are Jelly Cubes and Caramel Cubes. The former will be removed once your pet reaches a certain level, while the latter can be removed using an item called a “Caramel Crusher.” Lastly we have Paper Cubes, which are permanent and can never be turned into a blank space.

Candies come in various shapes and sizes, each with different abilities that can either raise a pet’s stats or activate an effect under specific conditions. For example, if the pet’s HP falls below a certain amount, it will create a temporary effect that reduces the amount of damage it receives.

There are two ways to go about removing candy. Using a Candy Eraser, you can completely delete the candy. The Candy Remover, on the other hand, merely removes the candy and returns it to your item pack.

Candy Compression

Candy can end up being quite large when you acquire them, leading to situations where it could be quite cumbersome trying to place it in the Candy Box. You can reduce its size through an action called “Candy Compression.” A candy that was originally 3 x 3, for example, could be reduced to 1 x 1.  Candy Compression is very much like equipment grinding, in that it requires meseta and grinders, and has a chance of failure.

Summoner Skills

• Alter Ego: Raises the pet’s attack power, however, both you and the pet will suffer damage if the pet gets hit by attacks.
• Point Assist: Marks the enemy with an icon, similar to that of Weak Bullet. Increases the damage your pet inflicts when attacking the marked area. Only works for the user’s own pets.
• Pet Sympathy: Increases the effectiveness of Shifta or Resta based on whether you fulfill your pet’s requests for those technics.
• HP Restorate: Gradually recovers HP when the player’s health falls below a certain threshold.
• Subclass Grow Up: Increases the subclass’ EXP gain in quests.

Players will have to wait until January 29th’s [Maestro Summoner] scratch before they can try out the cool new layered costumes for the Summoner class. You can also receive a bonus item by playing the AC scratch several times, however the reward will have trade restrictions imposed upon it.

Reborn: Episode 4 is almost here! Starting after the date listed below, players can download a portion of the January 27th update in advance.

When the pre-patch becomes available, you will be prompted to download it when you open the Official PSO2 Launcher. Click [Yes] in the dialog box that appears and the download process will begin.

The downloaded files will be stored in the “_precede” folder, located in your PSO2 installation directory.

Once the Episode 4 update goes live during maintenance on January 27th, the pre-patch files will automatically be copied over to the official game.
The file size for the main patch will be revealed at a later time.

The March issue of Dengeki Bazooka!! is now available for purchase. Included with the magazine is an item code for a Mag device modeled after the Oh! Gattiman comic’s Ketsukacchin character.

PSO2 Episode Selection

• All characters will start the game from Episode 4 once the update goes live, including those who are currently playing Episodes 1 ~ 3.
• EP 1~3 players, after making some progress through Episode 4, will be given the option to choose between EP1~3 or EP4 the next time they log in.
• In other words, making it past a certain point in Episode 4’s story will unlock the option of choosing between EP1~3 and EP4 upon logging into the game.
• Those who wish to play Episode 1 ~ 3 content should select the
  Start from (EP1~3) option on the character selection screen.

If [Episode 4] is selected on startup:

• You will advance through the Story using the [Story Board] and not the [Matter Board].
• Event Fields will not appear during quests. Story events will instead be activated by selecting “Event Pieces” on the Story Board.
• Some NPCs will not show up in the lobby.
• You will not be able to play Story Quests from Episodes 1 ~ 3.

If [Episode 1 ~ 3] is selected on startup:

• You will be able to play the Episode 1 ~ 3 stories in order.
• The menu option to [Play from Episode 3] will no longer be available when the game begins. Characters with Episode 3 [Matter Boards] prior to this update can continue their EP 3 progress in the same manner as before.
• You will advance through the story using the [Matter Board].
• Event Fields will display in quests and can be accessed to start the event.

Quest & Client Order Changes

• Featured Quests will now be unlocked once the Tokyo Free Field Quest is cleared.
• Daily Orders will now be unlocked once the Tokyo Free Field Quest is cleared.
• Io’s Client Orders will now be unlocked once you clear Nab Rappy Capture or finish your Mag License Application order. 
• The contents of Daily Orders and Team Orders will change during maintenance on January 27th in response to the release of the Tokyo field.

※Those who’ve already unlocked the aforementioned features will retain access to them.

Initial Photon Arts

New characters created after the release of Episode 4 will initially learn these Photon Arts / Technics.

Other Changes

• The placement of certain shops and attendants will be altered.
• Certain NPCs have been newly outfitted with Layered Costumes.
• Some costume and accessory behaviors will be adjusted to accompany the implementation of Layered Costumes and the new Accessory Size & Angle features.
• In Episode 4, the Client Orders required to obtain a Compound Technic will no longer exist. These technics must instead be obtained from the Photon Drop Exchange Shop.
  • Players who select Episode 1 ~ 3 can also obtain them through Client Orders in the same manner as before.

Weapons Badge Changes

• The Weapons Badge changes will be implemented during February 10th’s maintenance.
• Once this goes live, Weapons Badge 2015 will no longer be obtainable.
• However, the [Weapons Badge 2015 Exchange] will continue its service by being available from the Exchange Shop.

Are you Ready For Episode 4?

All features listed in this linked article, including the new character customization options, will be arriving on January 27th, 2016! However, the Maestro Summoner AC Scratch will be released two days later on January 29th. Coming up in late February will be the release of the “Episode 4 Character Creation Demo”. This is a standalone program where you can test how your computer fares with the new graphics setting.
