What About The Vita?

This section below is based on personal opinion and has nothing to do with Sega’s press releases. We’ve been seeing a lot of questions about the Vita version and we hope to bring some clarity to the situation.

At this current time, the only major PSO2 service that is not online is the smartphone version. That being said, the majority of people outside of Japan will have an extremely difficult time connecting to the servers. If you can connect outside of Japan, congratulations, you are one of the lucky few who won’t be experiencing any problems.

There are some people within Japanese territory who are having difficulty connecting too. This is why Sega is addressing those issues as noted in the section above. All we can do is sit back and wait for further developments.

Some new cutscenes from Phantasy Star Nova were released today. The cutscenes below feature a customized character, Lutina, Fieldia, Izuna, and Seil. You can see their character portraits from the Famitsu Phantasy Star Nova article.

Lutina is the main heroine. Fieldia is your superior and a combat officer. Seil is a party member playing as the main protagonist’s rival. You’ll see him get kicked by Fieldia in one of the cutscenes. Lastly, Izuna is the shy one who doesn’t talk very much. She’s the Newman Ranger in purple.

One thing to note from the HUD, instead of PP appearing underneath your HP bar, you’ll use “GP” instead. It appears this may stand for “Gran Point” based on the context of the video.

There’s a team from the ARKS Special Planetary Search Unit, known as Alter. They were forced to make an emergency landing on Planet Machia, when their ship, the “Delta Variant” came under attack. Since planet Machia has the peculiar quality of negating the use of “photons,” the team will be forced to find a way to survive.

Since photons are non-existent, this game will introduce a new energy known as “Gran” (Grand). This energy can be seen gushing out in various places from the planet. We hope to provide more details in the future, but in the meantime, you can check out the new screenshots below.

It’s time for the Phantasy Star Festa 2014 ~Online~ event! Players are tasked with clearing the targeted quest over and over to earn points that will be used to unlock rewards at a later date. Each player will contribute the following points when clearing the targeted quest.

Round Objectives / Stars and Points

Each round has a set objective, whether it is to clear a certain quest or defeat a certain enemy. By clearing these objectives, you’ll earn points you can contribute to your group, and stars you can use to purchase items at the Arkuma Prize Shop!

Stars	Stars are acquired by clearing the objectives. Use the stars to purchase items at the Arkuma Prize Shop. In each round, there’s a [Borderline Attainment Number] for stars. Reach this number to earn stars and items as a bonus—once per round. In each round, there’s a cap to the number of stars you can earn.
Points	Clearing the objectives contributes points towards your group. These points will determine the order the ships are placed at the end of each round. Their placement determines the amount of “victory points” achieved. Learn more about this in the “Scoring” tab. There’s a cap to the number of points you can contribute per round.

Rewards Info

This tab lists the rewards you can acquire per difficulty level. For example, in the screenshot above, clearing the targeted quest on Super Hard nets you 30 stars and 30 points. The points themselves will be contributed into the group’s overall score. You can do these over and over until you reach the cap. Click on the “Objectives” tab, to learn more about the cap.

Rappy Groups

Each ship is paired with another to form a “Ship Alliance.” These alliances are separated into Rappy Groups.

Rounds and Victory Points

The event is divided into several rounds which start every 12 hours. At the end of each round, points contributed by players are tallied to determine the winning group. Each group will then earn “victory points” based on the order in which they place.

Results and Boosts

The Rappy Races visualizes the current standings each round. The results will be posted on the large monitors after the round is complete.

Groups that achieved high rankings could acquire EXP, Rare Drop, or other boosts. Groups that ranked low can acquire Point Boosts. Whatever boosts you receive will be listed in the round information window for you to confirm.

The last tab lists the schedule for the boost event, which usually occurs in the following round the next day in Japan. For example since Round #1 started on July 4th at 12 PM, then the boost period will apply July 5th at 12 PM.

Final Results and Arkuma Prize Shop

The final results will be announced on the large monitor at the conclusion of the entire event. Each participant will receive stars as rewards and be able to purchase exclusive items based on their group’s final standing.

In our previous article we learned about Gran, an energy source spewing from the surface of Planet Machia. Today we’ll briefly touch upon its use in Phantasy Star Nova.

Players have faced countless numbers of Darkers in Phantasy Star Online 2. Phantasy Star Nova plans to bring them back in a slightly different way.  These ferociously evolved Darkers, adapting to the current environment on Planet Machia, will now be referred to as “Gran Darkers.” Expect to see familiar faces like Dagans, Kuklonahdas, Micdas, and others.

Resonance Cannon (Halo Weapon Category)

Instead of Photon Arts, our heroes will be utilizing Gran Arts; special attacks both new and old from Phantasy Star Online 2. And don’t worry Forces, because Technics (a long tradition in the Phantasy Star Series) will be returning as well. Whether you’re casting Zonde on enemies, or healing your allies with Resta, you can rely upon the various technics to change the course of battle.

The Gran Arts and Technics confirmed so far include:

• Nova Strike (Swords)
• Scissor Edge (Dbl. Sabers)
• Burn Smash (Piles)
• Resta (Technic)
• Zonde (Technic)

In addition to this, the “Chaining” system (which was first introduced in Phantasy Star Portable 2) will make its return in Phantasy Star Nova. We don’t have the details on how it works exactly in this iteration, but we do know that there’s a UI element displaying the chain counter and damage multipliers at the top of the screen.

If you’d like to get a taste of what Phantasy Star Nova has to offer, there will be a demo released in August on the Japanese PlayStation Store. It will feature some cutscenes and a boss battle against the Gigantes. In addition, a playable demo for attendees of the Phantasy Star Thanks Festa will be available on July 26 at the Sapporo Convention Center, and August 3rd at Port Messe Nagoya Building 2.

New Field: The Steel Desert

Now we can formally introduce a new field for Phantasy Star Nova. This location is known as the “Steel Desert” or the “Steel Wastelands.” Here the earth is covered in a red soil comprised of iron.

Quest information and locations will be displayed on a world map, reminiscent to the one used in Phantasy Star Universe.

Hatsune Miku Live Concert Event!

To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Project Diva series, Hatsune Miku and Megurine Luka will be holding concerts starting July 23rd, 2014! Together they will sing Phantasy Star Portable 2′s main theme song, “Living Universe,” live in the Arks Lobby!

Those who attend the concert will be granted a [rare drop] [exp] [meseta] boost which will last two hours after the concert ends.

All content below will appear July 16th, 2014.

Timed Abilities

Timed Abilities could be thought of as potentials for your units; only that they last for a period of time. First, the player crafts a “Data Drive” which is then used to craft “Timed Ability Data Items.” These items can be appended onto a unit for various effects.

When this update goes live, [Timed Ability Installations] will have a lv. 30 cap. As you increase your crafting levels, you can achieve additional bonuses. Some bonuses include increased chances of extending the effect’s duration, decreased cooldown times, and more!

Timed Abilities have several features:

• Main Effect: HP Recovery, EXP Boosts, etc.
• Sub Effects: HP/ATK/Parameter Boosts
• Extra Effects: HP/ATK/Parameter Boosts
• Effect Period: # of Days
• Effect Conditions: Specific Fields/Quest Types
           ※The effect requires the above conditions to be satisfied.

Certainly, there will be new craft builders that can decrease cooldown times for this system too.

Mining Base Defense: Despair

A new mining base defense mission will be arriving on Wednesday. This time, the stage takes place at a base that’s starting to get infected. As infestation settles into the defense socket, the Darkers will have complete control releasing their Darker Particle Gun. Players should try purifying these sockets as quick as possible!

The Darkers have a few more tricks up their sleeve. They can now divide the battlefield by placing a large wall made from a substance allowing only them to go through. In addition an infected airship—the menace from the skies—will rain down terror on the battlefield. The Arks should utilize long distance attacks to bring it down.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Sorza Brahda. This enemy, who wields a staff in both hands, provides logistical support for the Darkers. Players should eradicate this threat immediately as not only can it strengthen the Darkers, it can also infect sockets nearby.

But not all hope is lost, once the ARKS unleash a powerful weapon….

The Arks Interception Silhouette, nicknamed the A.I.S, is a robot here to assist us with eradicating the Darkers. It features high-mobility and powerful weapons. This robot is available at 200, 7,000, and 10,000 points, and can be activated 3 times during the quest.

New 11 stars that display a coat of arms are expected to appear. Weapon types will include a wand, bullet bow, twin machine gun, twin dagger, and wired lances.

Episode 2 Ch.6 and Event Chronicle

The year is AP 228. See the event that took place 10 years in the past. The birth of the second generation Clariskrays, and all the records before they vanished.

The Event Chronicle lets you recapture your moments in history for Phantasy Star Online 2. You can rewatch NPC conversations and scenes from the story in a neatly organized list.

Theodore’s Partner Card

In the newly released matterboard, watching a certain event in the shopping area will lead you to acquiring Theodore’s partner card.

Other changes

• The Team Name Changer is available to teams level 2+. After the initial change, they’ll be locked out of editing the name again for 30 days.
• A new setting in options will notify players if their Premium Sets are about to expire within 7 days.
• Some AC Scratch Gold content will come with several items.
• The turrets in all mining base defense quests will have improved range.

Data Drives are saved into one of three slots corresponding to the unit’s location on the body. Please be aware that crafting a new data drive will overwrite whatever was saved on that slot.

Temporary Ability Data Creation

Once you’ve finished saving a data drive, you can start crafting items that attach to the unit. Choose one of the three data drive slots and supply the required materials.

Temporary Ability Data requires three kinds of materials:

1. Photon Drops or related items
2. Unit Crafting Materials
3. Meseta

[Temporary Ability Data] crafting is more concerned with the time frame the effect lasts. If you are unhappy with the recipes shown in the Data Drive selection screen, please refer to the 3 tabs in the previous section.

Select a Crafting Line and a Data Drive to initiate the crafting process.

After the craft is complete, an item like the one displayed above will appear in your inventory under the consumables tab.

Attaching Temporary Ability Data

Check the consumables tab in your inventory to apply the Temporary Ability to the unit. When the item is ready to be consumed, the confirmation screen will target the unit currently equipped to your character. The unit it selects is based on whether the data applies to rear, arm, or leg units. Press the left blue button to apply the ability ※ Please Note: Performing this action binds the unit to its owner.

July 30th Update

We’ve finally made it to Part 2 of the Phantasy Star Festa and 2nd Year Anniversary Event! This time the “Silver Steel Blade” will serve as our new limited quest where several bosses may appear the same time. The quest’s main attraction is Knight Gear, who’ll be making a cameo appearance from the arcade game, “Shining Force Cross Exlesia!”

Defeat Knight Gear to receive some lovely collaboration items like [＊Knight Gear Edge], [Knight Gear Face], room items, and music discs!

Knight Gear will also drop these 11 star items on Super Hard!

Interlocking Web Event Continues!

The interlocking web event will target the “Silver Steel Blade” limited quest starting July 30th, 2014. The rules are the same as before; players must clear the new limited quest over and over to contribute points towards unlocking the rewards each week. Points are accumulated through the power of all ARKS members, let’s aim towards clearing the goals!

A sneak peak at the cross collaboration.

Phantasy Star Nova, releasing later this year, will feature new aspects never before seen in Phantasy Star Online 2. With a new class and new weapon types, players will get to experience the thrill of battling the Gigantes on the ground and in the air. Famitsu got their hands on a demo which will release in August at the Japanese PlayStation Store. Parts of the information within this article are gathered from Famitsu’s personal experience and magazine articles. All screenshots and renders below are press materials and are not from the demo.

New Class: Busters

Busters are an all-purpose class that can wield a wide variety of weapons, including halos and piles. “Piles” are harpoon-like weapons with a “stake” attached to the end, that are fired into the enemy’s skin. Attacking the location where the stake landed will allow players to deal heavy damage.  However, one negative aspect about these weapons are their slow attack speeds. So it might be best to switch to a sword to drive in the stakes directly.

New Weapon Type: Halo

Halos are another new weapon type that have an interesting new feature. Not only can they do long distance attacks, but they can also create scaffolds in the air to let players ascend to new heights.

Ascend the scaffold and attack the stakes!

The Gigantes is a biomechanical beast that fires missiles and bullets as it approaches. Considering that its armor is strong, you’ll have to focus on its weakpoints that emit a yellow light. Attacking those locations can break off the armor exposing a wider vulnerable area. Hammering in the stakes around the weakpoint can also deal heavy damage.

Gigantes Alcyone

Gigantes “Alcyone” (Alkyone) is quite different from the ones we’ve seen so far. It’s a floating octopus with the ability to regenerate its tentacles. It has several tricks up its arsenal like smokescreens, flamethrowers, and timebombs.

Customizable Base

Though it starts out rather empty, the player can use the Gran they’ve gathered to develop various facilities around the base; for example, a Beauty Salon.
